 Tratto dalla controversa pièce teatrale di Jack
Kirkland (a sua volta tratta dell'ancor più controverso romanzo di Erskine Caldwell), “La via del
tabacco” mostra gli aspetti peggiori della società americana del vecchio Sud alle prese con i tragici effetti
successivi alla grande crisi del 1929. Le banche che espropriano i terreni; gli anziani che vegetano davanti alle loro
catapecchie, costretti ad arrabattarsi per sbarcare il lunario; i giovani, sempre analfabeti per l’incuria di uno
Stato del tutto inesistente; il potere assorbente e totalizzante della pratica religiosa.
Per il suo romanzo,
Caldwell s'ispirò alle persone conosciute durante gli anni passati in Georgia, dando così vita ad un romanzo che
all'epoca risultò scioccante, anzitutto per i dettagli sessuali di cui il testo era ricco.
Diretto da John Ford,
il film narra le vicende dei Lester, un'importante e inetta famiglia che vive fuori dal mondo.
I Lester stanno per
essere cacciati via dalle terre che abitano perché hanno smesso di pagare l'affitto, ma ciononostante continuano a
rifuggire chiunque tenti di dar loro una mano.
Malgrado non sia esplicita quanto l'omonimo romanzo o la pièce
teatrale, questa pellicola fu comunque considerata piuttosto scabrosa dal pubblico dell'epoca.

 Plot 
 Adapted from the controversial play by Jack
Kirkland,  "Tobacco Road" shows the worst aspects of farmer’s life who fight against the tragic effects following
the Great Depression. Banks who expropriate the agricultural property, the elders who vegetate in front of their slums,
young people who are illiterate as a result of the lack of state schools, and all-absorbing power of religion.
The
Caldwell’s novel, inspired by the people known during his years in Georgia, proved shocking at the time,
primarily for the sexual details that the book contained.
Directed by John Ford, the film tells the story of the
Lester, an important and inept family who living out of the world.
The Lester are being driven out of their
properties for nonpayment of rent, but nevertheless continue to shun anyone who tries to give them a hand.
Although
not explicit as the novel or play, the film was considered rather scandalous from the public at the time.
